6 Things I Like About A Girl Like Her

This is one of those reviews where I can’t do much more than gush, so here’s a dedicated post to me just gushing about A Girl Like Her.

First Impressions:

This book grabbed my attention from the start and it was all because of the period mention. First impressions count, folks!

Representation:

Ruth is a curvy, autistic character of colour who has been abused in the past. And she’s of Sierra Leonean descent (I’m biased when it comes to African characters). Just having marginalised characters is not enough, the story also has to do justice to the characters, and I think A Girl Like Her does Ruth justice! It also helps that the author is autistic, so I trust that she knows what she’s writing about.

Ruth:

Probably my favourite part of reading this story was just being able to relate so much with Ruth. She’s funny and blunt and just so entertaining to read about. And don’t we just love a character who wears pyjamas all day? Life goals right there! I loved how the author made her come to life even with how short the story is, and I could appreciate her being portrayed as more than a stereotype.

Ruth’s Family:

I love me a story with great family relationships, and the sisterhood portrayed in this story was just so heart-warming. I also loved Ruth’s mum, even though she’s a very minor character in the grand scheme of the story.

Evan:

Evan is such a beta male in the best ways possible. In romance books, there’s such a craze for douchy alpha love interests that it seems like people don’t even like nice guys anymore. But Evan? Evan is perfect.

The Romance:

The banter between the two love interests was just very sweet! I loved how they started off as friends. And then the heat. *fans self*

As you can tell, I really like this book. In fact, I like it so much that I can overlook the cover. It’s a brief and heartwarming way to take a break from the usual tropey romance books.

Does this sound like something you’d like to read? Have you read any other Talia Hibbert books?
