Top 5 Tuesday: Why I Love Reading

Hello everyone! Today, I decided to take part in a weekly meme hosted by Shanah @ Bionic Bookworm. I don’t know if this’ll be something I do every week, but I quite liked this week’s prompt.

Here are the Top Five Reasons I Love Reading:

My life is quite boring, so reading is my favourite way to spice things up. Reading makes me happy, and it’s the perfect way to keep myself occupied and entertained, while fully engaging my imagination in a way movies cannot.

As drama-free as my life is, sometimes I just feel like spacing out completely. It’s a great feeling whenever I can forget my responsibilities for a few hours and just immerse myself in a good story.

I love travelling. However, I’m a broke and busy student. Reading is the ultimate way to travel on a budget. Even cooler, I can go to places that only exist in the stories I read; places like Narnia and Faerieland.

I don’t know about you, but when I read, I always feel like I know something other people don’t. Reading makes me feel like I’m a member of an exclusive club that only readers get to be in. I love that feeling!

Reading teaches me stuff. It’s a way for me to experience some things without actually experiencing them, and there are many life lessons to be learned from characters- wise and foolish alike.

I love to read for many reasons. Mostly because I love to see what is out there – stretch my imagination, learn something new. I do love non fiction and historical fiction. And right now I am doing a Read The World challenge, so I am hopeful to learn things about many countries. I spend a lot of time on a public tram system here in Switzerland each day, so lots of time to read. Helps pass the time.

Not many people like non fiction, so it’s interesting that you do.
You’re lucky that you can read on a moving vehicle. I get so sick that I can’t even imagine opening a book😂

Agreed with all of these. I’d also add that I like reading because I love looking into the head of different people, people who are completely unlike me, experience different settings, different cultures. I like when a book makes me think and empathise.

Plus, reading and talking about books has led to many new, amazing friendships.

    • Ibukun

That is so true. I once wrote a paper on how readers are better empathisers because they read. And the friendship aspect of reading is something I’m starting to relate to!

  • Jamsu

I love reading because it’s the only romance I have in my life and it’s escape from my boring ordinary life. Also rereading old favorites feels like coming home.

I agree with ALL of your reasons for reading, especially with “secrets!” I always feel like reading is something that the few and far between do (it’s not true) but most people would rather look at something on their cellphone that look at the pages of a book. *high five!* Great post 🙂

absolutely agree with all of these! nothing ever happens in my real life, so I settle for the safety of living vicariously through fictional characters 😅 I hadn’t really thought of it as an “exclusive club” like you mention, probably because it was always a solitary activity when I was growing up, but the bookish community definitely has me reevaluating that belief! science has even shown that readers have increased knowledge and empathy, so it’s definitely good for you too 😉

    • Ibukun

I just got involved with the book community myself, but that exclusivity is real! Especially if you’re involved in buddy reads or a book club or you just have a few friends to gush over a new book together.

  • Tecsie

I’ve never really thought about any deeper reasons to why I enjoy reading other than it’s entertaining but I can’t definitely relate to the whole “experiencing things without experiencing them” because there sure is a lot of stuff I’m happier just reading about haha

  • Michelle

I love reading because all of this! Also to feel less alone. I guess that’s why I started. I was a pretty introvert kid, grew up at a boardingschool. Reading books made me feel like there was always someone waiting for me
